| Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the best American players and SHERRY baby that brings a return that is gut wrenching, painful to watch, but it's a character who is rooting for the entire film. In the last frame you feel their anguish and the imperative that she wants to have a life that is better than that one has taken. SHERRY BABY reminds me of Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson in the struggle to overcome drug and make something of your life. Too bad that Sherry has to keep that dark, long road before it can come into its own and move beyond its painful past. The scene in a movie with his father at the birthday party will stay with me forever, as you can now fully understand your pain and anguish. | I thought that the film included a large-screen game and was a strong vehicle for each of the actors to develop their characters. The story can not be totally original, but I think it's a fortress because it is the telling of history through each of the characters that makes it an achievement. Rarely has a film not as strong protagonists and antagonists and actually allow viewers to identify with each of them. I enjoyed watching the raw tension between the characters that could relate to personally, as my family was involved in the foster care system for many years to grow. I think some may want to see more of a definitive ending, but for me, it's more about the journey and struggles in it. I would recommend this movie for those who want to see a seemingly familiar story told in a unique way. |
| I saw this movie at Sundance and thought Maggies performance was WOW. There is so much trash that makes it to the big screen, I am surprised this movie did not get wide release. It is clear that the "costumes" to think that films make you think does not appeal to mainstream audiences. While watching this movie at Sundance, I was sitting about two women who were probation officers for adults and declared that the film is very realistic and thought that the director has done a great job of capturing what women go through after that are released from prison. He also said that most women in prison have been sexually or physically abused at some point in their lives. Great job and prestige to all those who worked on this movie! |
